My heart problems began at the age of 16 when I was diagnosed with a heart murmur that was believed to have been caused by rheumatic fever.  When I was a senior in college, a cardiac catheterization was performed and I was told that sometime later in life I would need to have my aortic valve replaced.  For the next 40 years, I was able to live a very active and healthy life.  Throughout that time I regularly consulted with a cardiologist to monitor my heart condition; two years ago we agreed that valve replacement surgery should take place within five years.

 

Then, while on vacation in the Caribbean, I fainted after moving rapidly from a sedentary position in the hot sun.  When I returned home and consulted with my cardiologist, he suggested I look into having heart valve replacement surgery within the next year.  He recommended surgeons at two hospitals:  the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins.  In conducting my own due diligence about the two hospitals, I spoke with a few friends in my WPO forum.  One of my forum mates suggested I call Healthnetwork.

 

I called Healthnetwork the next morning and they quickly validated my doctor’s recommendations, and helped me to evaluate and compare the two hospitals by connecting me to a liaison at each one.  The liaisons were quite helpful in answering my questions and providing information to me.

 

My cardiologist and I agreed that I should pursue my surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.  The Healthnetwork liaison helped me in scheduling the procedure with the hospital and the surgeon, and then helped my wife and me with hotel arrangements and a car service, and even greeted us as VIPs upon our arrival.  During my eight days in the hospital, it was very reassuring to know that we had someone outside the hospital staff who cared about us and would help us sort through any difficulties.  When some post-surgical issues arose, the Healthnetwork liaison was a comfort to my wife, and even intervened on my behalf to make certain that additional testing took place in a timely fashion prior to my release.

 

The entire experience was great, from the pre-arrival information I received to the treatment I received in the hospital.  I knew I wanted the most skilled surgeon I could find, and that is exactly what I got; the head of cardio-thoracic surgery replaced my aortic valve, and I believe I could not have been in better hands.  Healthnetwork, you provided me with a professional, talented, and compassionate team of experts, and I cannot thank you enough.  As a GOLD supporter, I firmly believe in and support your mission, and I encourage other CEO and WPO members to reach out to you when they need assistance.
